FTGFOP

FTGFOP sits at the apex of the orthodox tea grading hierarchy, a system used primarily for Indian, Sri Lankan, and Nepalese black teas. Each letter adds a qualifier: OP (Orange Pekoe, whole leaf), FOP (Flowery, with some tips), GFOP (Golden, more tips), TGFOP (Tippy, abundant golden tips), and FTGFOP (Finest, the best of this grade). Some estates add SFTGFOP (Special/Super Finest) for their absolute top lots. Tea traders humorously translate FTGFOP as "Far Too Good For Ordinary People." The golden tips visible in FTGFOP teas are the unopened terminal buds of the tea shoot, covered in fine white or golden hairs. These buds are rich in amino acids and contribute sweetness and aromatic complexity. FTGFOP teas brew lighter in color than lower grades but offer far greater nuance and depth of flavor. The grade does not guarantee quality on its own — storage, freshness, and the specific estate matter enormously — but FTGFOP from a reputable garden is a reliable indicator of premium tea.
