The fine down and pointed tips of its tightly rolled leaf give Xinyang Maojian its name, one of China's Ten Famous Teas from the Xinyang region of southern Henan. Grown in a transitional climate between northern and southern China, it steeps a bright, chestnut-scented infusion with a clean, slightly sweet taste, medium body, and a refreshing finish, carrying a caffeine near 20 milligrams and 8 milligrams of L-theanine. Plucked as one bud and one leaf and barely oxidized near 2 percent, it is picked in April between 300 and 800 meters. Prized since the Tang dynasty, it stands among the northernmost of China's celebrated green teas.
