Developed by the Tea Research Foundation of Kenya as clone TRFK 306/1, Kenyan Purple Tea springs from a natural mutation of Camellia sinensis grown high in the Rift Valley. Its leaves hold heavy loads of anthocyanins, the same pigment that colors blueberries, tinting them purple. Oxidized to about 85 percent and plucked as one bud and two purple-pigmented leaves, the tea brews light-bodied and smooth with subtle berry notes and a caffeine near 32 milligrams, below that of standard Kenyan blacks. Cultivated between 1,500 and 2,200 meters and harvested year-round, it has drawn international attention as a functional specialty tea rather than a commodity black.
