Muscatel

Muscatel is the holy grail of Darjeeling tea — a complex, sweet, musky character reminiscent of Muscat grapes that develops exclusively during the second flush harvest (May-June). The scientific explanation involves the Empoasca flavescens leafhopper, a tiny insect whose feeding on young leaves triggers the plant's defense mechanism, producing terpene-based volatile compounds similar to those found in Muscat grape varieties. This same phenomenon occurs in Taiwan's Oriental Beauty oolong, where leafhopper-bitten leaves develop a distinctive honey-fruit character. Not every second flush Darjeeling will exhibit muscatel notes — it requires the right combination of cultivar (typically AV2 clone), altitude, weather conditions, and controlled leafhopper activity. Estates that consistently achieve muscatel character in their second flush can command premiums of $100-500 per kilogram at auction.
