Detalhes

Tea houses are the physical heart of tea culture, and their character reflects the society that produced them. China's chaguan (tea houses) have served as community centers for centuries — in Chengdu, teahouse culture remains vibrant, with patrons spending hours over bottomless cups of covered-bowl (gaiwan) tea while playing mahjong, conducting business, or listening to Sichuan opera. Beijing's lao she teahouse and Hangzhou's lakeside tea pavilions each reflect regional social customs. Japan's chashitsu (tea room) is an architectural meditation on simplicity: typically 4.5 tatami mats in size, with a low entrance (nijiriguchi) that requires guests to bow, symbolically leaving status outside. Taiwan's tea houses combine Chinese gongfu culture with modern café aesthetics, often featuring aged pu-erh, competition oolongs, and mountain spring water. In England, the tearoom evolved from 17th-century coffee house culture, with Twinings opening on the Strand in 1706 and the tradition expanding into the Victorian era's grand hotel tea rooms. Today's specialty tea houses worldwide draw from all these traditions, creating spaces that honor the contemplative, social, and sensory dimensions of tea drinking.
