Keeping the old heavy-roasting method rather than the lighter modern Anxi style, Muzha Tieguanyin is a traditional Taiwanese oolong from the Muzha, now Maokong, district of southern Taipei. Made from the Tieguanyin cultivar and oxidized to about 50 percent, the dark, tightly rolled leaf yields a warm amber liquor with ripe stone fruit, roasted barley, and caramelized sugar, and a long, soothing aftertaste that endures across many infusions. Spring and winter leaf grows between 200 and 400 meters and carries a caffeine near 28 milligrams. The deep charcoal roasting is central to its identity, favoring warmth and depth over the floral brightness of newer styles.
