Fair trade certification addresses the structural inequities of the global tea industry, where the world's estimated 13 million tea workers are among the lowest-paid agricultural laborers. Under Fairtrade International standards, certified buyers pay producers a minimum price that covers the cost of sustainable production plus a Fairtrade Premium — currently $0.50 per kilogram for loose tea — earmarked for community-decided investments in healthcare, education, housing, and infrastructure. The certification also requires compliance with environmental standards including restricted pesticide use, waste management, and water conservation. Kenya, India (especially Darjeeling and Assam), and Sri Lanka are the largest fair trade tea producing countries. Critics argue that fair trade's impact is limited because the premium represents a tiny fraction of retail price, certification costs burden small producers, and the minimum price floor can discourage quality improvement. Proponents counter that fair trade provides market access, price stability, and a framework for empowerment that is demonstrably better than the alternative. Major brands like Twinings, PG Tips, and Clipper now source significant volumes of fair trade certified tea.
