Description

A xanthine alkaloid that stimulates the central nervous system, present in tea at 20-90mg per cup depending on tea type, brewing method, and leaf quality. Tea caffeine (historically called 'theine' before chemical identity was confirmed) is modulated by L-theanine, creating a gentler, more sustained alertness compared to coffee. Young buds and tips contain more caffeine than mature leaves. Shade-grown teas accumulate more caffeine. Caffeine content decreases with successive infusions.
