Nantou County in central Taiwan is the island's most diverse tea-producing region, encompassing everything from the traditional roasted Dong Ding oolong at Lugu to the acclaimed Sun Moon Lake black teas. Dong Ding, meaning 'Frozen Summit,' produces Taiwan's most celebrated traditionally roasted oolong with a toasty, nutty-sweet character and remarkable depth. Sun Moon Lake's Ruby 18 (Hong Yu) cultivar, a cross between Burmese assamica and Taiwanese wild tea, produces a distinctive black tea with cinnamon, mint, and red fruit notes unlike any other. The wide elevation range across Nantou allows production from early spring through late autumn.
