Second Flush

Second flush follows the first flush after a brief pause, as warmer temperatures and stronger sunlight accelerate leaf growth. The additional solar energy drives higher polyphenol production, resulting in teas with greater body, deeper color, and more pronounced muscatel and fruity notes. In Darjeeling, second flush is considered the classic character — what most people mean when they say "Darjeeling tea." The leaves are more oxidized during processing, producing an amber-copper liquor with complex fruity, nutty, and spicy notes. In Assam, the second flush (June harvest) produces the region's most prized teas — robust, malty, and deeply colored, ideal for breakfast blends and milk tea. Second flush Darjeeling and Assam are generally more affordable than first flush but are considered by many connoisseurs to be more balanced and satisfying for everyday drinking.
