GI Certification
التعريف
Geographical Indication — a legal designation protecting teas produced in specific regions using traditional methods. Darjeeling, Longjing, Uji matcha, and Ceylon are among the most recognized tea GIs, preventing imitation products.
التفاصيل
Geographical Indication (GI) certification for tea functions similarly to appellation systems in wine, legally binding the product name to a specific production region and set of practices. Darjeeling was among the first teas to receive GI protection (India, 2004 and internationally through WTO TRIPS), requiring that tea labeled Darjeeling be grown in the defined 87-estate region of the Darjeeling hills. This was a critical step, as an estimated four times more tea was sold globally as Darjeeling than the region actually produced. Sri Lanka's Lion Logo certifies Ceylon tea. China's National GI system protects Longjing (West Lake, Hangzhou), Keemun (Qimen, Anhui), and dozens of other origin-specific teas. Japan protects Uji matcha, Shizuoka sencha, and Yame gyokuro. The EU recognizes several tea GIs under its Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) frameworks. GI certification benefits producers by preventing counterfeiting, maintaining premium pricing, and preserving traditional methods. Enforcement remains challenging, particularly in cross-border e-commerce, but GI protections are becoming increasingly important as specialty tea consumers demand authentic provenance.
