An essential trace mineral that tea provides in nutritionally significant amounts. A single cup of tea can supply 10-25% of the daily recommended intake. Tea plants efficiently absorb manganese from acidic soils, and the mineral is readily extracted during brewing. Manganese serves as a cofactor for numerous enzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD), a critical endogenous antioxidant. Green tea typically contains more bioavailable manganese than black tea.
