The gaiwan ('lidded bowl') is China's most versatile brewing vessel, consisting of a saucer, bowl, and lid. Invented during the Ming Dynasty, it allows precise control over steeping time and is ideal for gongfu brewing. The thin porcelain walls do not absorb flavors, making it suitable for any tea type. The lid doubles as a strainer and aroma cup.
