Yame in Fukuoka Prefecture is renowned as Japan's finest gyokuro-producing region, winning the prestigious National Tea Competition's top award more consistently than any other area. The inland basin location creates strong diurnal temperature variation and morning fog that mirrors the conditions prized in Uji. Traditional Yame gyokuro is shade-grown under hand-built reed and straw canopies (honzu) for at least 20 days, developing an intensely sweet, marine umami character with minimal astringency. Yame's 'Dento Hon Gyokuro' designation, requiring natural honzu shading and specific cultivars, represents the pinnacle of Japanese tea craftsmanship.
