About
Tea pets are small clay figurines that sit on the gongfu tea tray and are 'nourished' by pouring leftover tea, rinse water, and first infusions over them. Over months and years, the unglazed clay absorbs tea and develops a rich patina and subtle aroma. Common forms include mythical creatures (qilin, pixiu), animals (toads, pigs), and Buddhist figures. Some feature heat-activated color changes or spitting mechanisms.
