The fairness cup (gongdao bei or cha hai) is a small pitcher used in gongfu tea service to ensure equal strength across all cups. After steeping in a gaiwan or small teapot, the tea is poured entirely into the fairness cup, which stops the brewing and allows sediment to settle.
