A flavan-3-ol catechin present in all tea types, though in lower concentrations than EGCG. Epicatechin is more bioavailable than EGCG and contributes to tea's characteristic astringency and body. It is relatively stable during processing, so black and oolong teas retain meaningful EC levels even after oxidation. Also found in cocoa, grapes, and berries, epicatechin has been extensively studied for cardiovascular benefits.
