Yixing Clay
परिभाषा
A unique purple clay (zisha) found exclusively near Yixing city in Jiangsu province, China. Yixing clay is prized for tea brewing because its porous structure absorbs tea oils over time, gradually building a patina that enhances the flavor of subsequent brews.
विवरण
Yixing zisha (purple sand) clay is a naturally occurring material composed of quartz, kaolin, mica, and iron-rich minerals. Its unique microporous structure — visible under magnification as a network of tiny interconnected pores — allows the clay to breathe while retaining heat, making it ideal for gongfu brewing. Over years of use with a single tea type, the pores absorb aromatic oils and tannins, creating a seasoned patina that subtly enriches the flavor of each subsequent brew. This is why dedicated gongfu practitioners assign each Yixing pot to a single tea type (one for pu-erh, one for yancha, one for oolong) and never wash them with soap. Three main types of zisha exist: zini (purple clay, the most common), zhuni (vermillion clay, denser and rarer), and duanni (beige/yellow clay, lighter in body). Genuine Yixing pots are handmade by skilled artisans, and master-crafted pots from famous artists can sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars at auction. The Chinese government has restricted mining of certain clay deposits to prevent depletion. Fake Yixing pots abound — genuine ones are identified by the clay's characteristic sandy texture, the quality of the spout pour, and the lid fit.
