Theobromine

Health & Science

परिभाषा

A mild stimulant alkaloid related to caffeine, present in tea at roughly one-tenth the concentration. Theobromine acts as a gentle vasodilator and bronchodilator, contributing to tea's smooth, sustained energy without caffeine's intensity.

विवरण

Theobromine, more famously associated with chocolate, is present in tea at 1-4 mg per gram of dry leaf compared to caffeine's 10-40 mg per gram. While a weaker central nervous system stimulant than caffeine — roughly one-tenth the potency — theobromine has a longer half-life and acts primarily on the cardiovascular system rather than the brain. It gently dilates blood vessels, promoting circulation and a sensation of warmth, and relaxes bronchial smooth muscle, which may partly explain why a hot cup of tea can feel soothing during respiratory illness. Theobromine also acts as a mild diuretic, contributing to tea's overall fluid-balancing effect. The compound has a bitter taste that contributes to tea's flavor complexity, particularly in teas with higher concentrations like heavily roasted oolongs and aged pu-erh. Research suggests theobromine may have mood-elevating properties independent of caffeine, potentially explaining why tea creates a qualitatively different feeling of well-being compared to other caffeinated beverages. The synergistic combination of caffeine, theobromine, and L-theanine is unique to tea and accounts for its distinctive psychoactive profile.
