Tea Pet

Teaware

Definition

A small clay figurine, usually made from Yixing zisha clay, kept on the tea tray and ritually bathed in tea during gongfu sessions. Tea pets absorb tea oils over time, developing a rich patina that marks the owner's tea journey.

Details

Tea pets (cha chong) are a beloved tradition in Chinese gongfu culture, serving as both decorative companions and visual records of one's tea practice. Common forms include mythical creatures (pixiu, qilin, dragons), animals (toads, pigs, elephants), Buddhist figures, and playful characters. During each brewing session, the owner pours leftover tea or rinse water over the pet, gradually building a glossy patina of absorbed tea oils. A well-maintained tea pet develops a deep, lustrous sheen over years of daily use, becoming a physical testament to countless tea sessions. Some tea pets feature clever designs: hollow bodies with a small hole that produce a stream of liquid when heated, or color-changing clay that reacts to hot water. Traditionally, each pet is dedicated to one type of tea — a pu-erh pet receives only pu-erh, developing a specific aromatic character. Tea pets are often given as gifts between tea friends, and serious collectors may own dozens, rotating them seasonally or matching them to the tea being served. The ritual of feeding the tea pet adds a playful, contemplative dimension to the gongfu session.
