Details

The term tea garden carries a productive meaning and a social meaning, both central to tea culture. As a production term, tea garden refers to a cultivated area where Camellia sinensis is grown. In Darjeeling, gardens (estates) like Makaibari, Castleton, and Margaret's Hope are renowned for their specific terroir, and tea is marketed by garden name as a mark of provenance. Sri Lanka uses the term estate, while China uses cha yuan (tea garden) or shan (mountain) for wild-grown tea areas. In the social sense, tea gardens are public spaces designed for the pleasurable consumption of tea in an outdoor setting. Turkey's cay bahcesi is perhaps the world's most vibrant tea garden culture — every town has dozens of outdoor tea gardens where families, businessmen, and friends gather daily. In 18th-century England, pleasure gardens like Vauxhall and Ranelagh featured tea pavilions alongside entertainment, and were among the few public spaces where men and women could socialize freely. Japan's tea gardens (roji) are the contemplative paths leading to the tea room, designed to transition the guest from the worldly realm to the spiritual space of the tea ceremony.
