The complete environmental context — soil, climate, altitude, latitude, and microclimate — that gives a tea its unique regional character. The same cultivar grown in different terroirs will produce distinctly different teas.

Borrowed from wine vocabulary, terroir in tea encompasses every environmental factor that the plant absorbs and expresses. High-altitude gardens like Darjeeling (2,000m) produce lighter, more aromatic teas because cooler temperatures slow leaf growth, concentrating flavor compounds. The mineral-rich, rocky soil of Wuyi Mountain imparts the distinctive yan yun (rock rhyme) to its oolongs. Taiwan's misty mountain climate creates the creamy, floral character of high-mountain oolongs. Even within a single estate, different plots can yield remarkably different teas. The Japanese concept of sanchi (production area) similarly recognizes that Uji, Shizuoka, and Kagoshima each produce senchas with identifiable regional fingerprints.
