Fairness Cup (Cha Hai)

The fairness cup (gongdao bei or cha hai) is a small pitcher used in gongfu tea service to ensure equal strength across all cups. After steeping in a gaiwan or small teapot, the tea is poured entirely into the fairness cup, which stops the brewing and allows sediment to settle. From there, it is distributed evenly among the drinking cups. Glass versions let you appreciate the tea's color.
